Oil Dips below USD70 per barrel...wow !

By Kenneth Musante, CNNMoney.com staff writer

v2-cnnmoney-chart1.mkw.gif

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Oil prices fell Tuesday, briefly sliding below the $70-a-barrel mark, as talk of falling demand continues to weigh on the markets.

U.S. crude for November delivery fell $4.20 to $70.05 a barrel, after dipping as low as $69.77.

It was the expiration day for the November contract, often a signal for volatile trading. The December contract, which becomes active Wednesday, fell $3.76 to $70.63.

Traders awaited the Energy Department's weekly inventory report, due Wednesday, that was expected to show a buildup in crude and gasoline stocks, according to analysts polled by energy research firm Platts. Part of the reason for the expected inventory increase is the decline in demand, induced in part by the high prices of the past summer and the weakened economy.

"We're going to go from 2 cars in the garage to 1 car and a bus pass," said James Cordier, founder of online commodities brokerage OptionSellers.com in Florida.

Oil prices have fallen more than 50% from a record high of $147.27 a barrel in mid-July as investors have worried about falling demand for petroleum-based fuel due to both cost and the slowdown in the global economy.

In the United States, the world's largest oil consumer, gas prices hit a high of $4.114 a gallon in July on average, though they have since fallen below $2.90 at the pump, according to motorist group AAA.

OPEC cut: The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries plans to announce a production cut at an emergency meeting Friday, in order to stem a three-month slide in crude prices, according to the oil cartel's president Chakib Khelil, as reported by Algerian news media. Khelil is also the oil minister of Algeria.

According to Khelil, the global oil market is oversupplied by about 2 million barrels a day.

Investors expect to see OPEC cut production by at least 1 million barrels a day, but Cordier said the planned cut may not be enough to impact oil markets.

(Carlos Barria/Reuters)

By Jonathan Stempel 2 hours, 20 minutes ago

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Warren Buffett said the U.S. economy is unlikely to improve before 2009, and there was a "reasonable chance" that Fannie Mae (FNM.N) and Freddie Mac (FRE.N) shareholders would be wiped out though the companies themselves are too big to fail.

Speaking on Friday on CNBC television, Buffett, the billionaire investor, said some businesses in his Berkshire Hathaway Inc (BRKa.N)(BRKb.N) insurance and investment conglomerate are struggling as the economy suffers from past excess in making credit available.

"You always find out who's been swimming naked when the tide goes out. We found out that Wall Street has been kind of a nudist beach," said Buffett, who was called the world's richest person by Forbes magazine.

Referring to credit deterioration, Buffett said, "Right now the situation is still getting worse, and I would say that I don't see any early end to that."

What is the Mesothelium?

The mesothelium and its associated cancerous condition, mesothelioma, is relatively unknown by most people. It is most often found in men, but sometimes in women.

The mesothelium is the membrane that lines three of the body's cavities: the pleura or thoracic cavity; the peritoneum or abdominal cavity; and the pericardium or heart sac. Mesothelial tissue is also found in the male internal reproductive organs and it covers the internal reproductive organs in women.

The mesothelium comes from the mesoderm cell layer that lines the body cavity in the embryonic state. It becomes the layer of cells that covers and protects our internal organs. The mesothelium has two layers of cells. The first layer immediately surrounds the organ and the second layer is the sac that surrounds the cavity.

The mesothelium produces a lubricating fluid that is released between the two layers, allowing moving organs, such as the beating heart, the expanding lungs and the active intestine, to glide easily within the body cavity.

Mesothelioma is a cancerous disease in which cells of the mesothelium become abnormal and divide without control. They can invade and damage nearby tissues and organs and the cancer cells can also spread from their original site to other parts of the body. Most cases of mesothelioma begin in the peritoneal cavity. Mesothelioma is linked to asbestos exposure and smoking.

Early symptoms of mesothelioma are generally non-specific, and may lead to a delay in diagnosis. Sometimes resembling viral pneumonia, mesothelioma patients who have the disease in their lungs may complain of shortness of breath, chest pain or persistent cough. Some patients don't have any symptoms at all. Symptoms for peritoneal mesothelioma can include pain or swelling in the abdomen, weight loss, bowel obstruction, anemia, or swelling of the feet.

Remember that only a doctor can make an exact diagnosis. Sometimes, the symptoms for mesothelioma are very similar to less serious conditions, so it is imperative that you discuss your symptoms with a physician.

Mesothelioma

What is mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos and symptoms may not appear for as long as 20 to 40 years after exposure. Mesothelioma is a cancerous tumor of the mesothelium. The mesothelium is the tissue made up of specialized cells called mesothelial cells which line the chest cavity, abdominal cavity, and the cavity around the heart. These cells also cover the outer surface of most internal organs.

The mesothelium produces a special lubricating fluid that allows organs to move around within the body with less friction. For example, this fluid makes it easier for the lungs to move inside the chest during breathing.

The mesothelium of the chest is known as the pleura. The mesothelium of the abdomen is called the peritoneum. The mesothelium of the pericardial cavity, which is the space around the heart, is called the pericardium.

Mesothelioma is a cancer that attacks any of these mesothelial regions.

Why is Health Insurance Important?

People buy health insurance for different reasons. The following are ten of these reasons. Please look them over and consider which reasons apply to you and which do not. This will help you to evaluate what type of health insurance will best meet your personal needs.

  1. Health insurance can protect you from the risk of uncertain bills for health care.

  2. Without health insurance, you may not be able to afford expensive services.

  3. Health insurance can pay for services that you use often.

  4. Health insurance can help you to get better quality care as a member of a coordinated health plan than you would get on your own.

  5. With health insurance, you do not have to worry about the cost of care when you are sick.

  6. The additional money provided by health insurance when you are sick may be more valuable to you than money when you are well.

  7. If you have more dependents than most people, then you may get more out of a family policy for health insurance.

  8. If you or your dependents have more health care needs than most people and you only pay an average premium, then you get more from health insurance than most people.

  9. You do not pay income tax on health insurance benefits so it is more valuable per dollar than the same amount in taxable pay.

  10. Health insurance companies generally pay lower prices to doctors and hospitals than you would pay on your own.

Auto Insurance Basics

By Freelance Writer for Insure.com

Auto insurance protects you, and others, from financial ruin in the event of an auto accident. It also comes to the rescue if your car is vandalized, catches on fire or is stolen.

And beyond protecting you financially, auto insurance is a social responsibility. Those who drive without insurance, and without the ability to pay for damages they cause, put the rest of us at great financial risk.

That's why all states (except New Hampshire and Wisconsin) require drivers to carry liability insurance. And even in New Hampshire and Wisconsin, if you choose not to carry insurance you must show that you have enough assets to pay for damages in the event of an accident. A basic auto insurance policy contains six types of coverage. Depending on where you live, some coverages are required and some are optional. (See Mimimum levels of required auto insurance for details.)

Auto insurance is comprised of:

1. Bodily injury liability

2. Property damage liability

3. Medical payments or Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

4. Collision

5. Comprehensive

6. Uninsured/Underinsured motorists coverage

Nelson Peltz, Billionaire Arby's Owner, Buys Wendy's For $2.34 Billion

In this March 1, 2007 file photo, walls full of memorabilia and decorations are seen at the very first Wendy's restaurant in Columbus, Ohio. The owner of Arby's on Thursday, April 24, 2008 said it is buying Wendy's International Inc. in an all-stock deal worth $2.34 billion that comes after the burger chain's board rejected at least two earlier offers by the company. (AP Photo/Kiichiro Sato, file)

COLUMBUS, Ohio — After two past rejections, the owner of Arby's shaved roast beef sandwich restaurants is buying Wendy's, the fast-food chain famous for its made-to-order square hamburgers and chocolate Frosty dessert, for around $2 billion.

Triarc Companies Inc., which is owned by billionaire investor Nelson Peltz, said Thursday it will pay about $2.34 billion in an all-stock deal for the nation's third-largest hamburger chain started in 1969 by Dave Thomas. Wendy's had rejected at least two buyout offers from Triarc.

Thomas' daughter Pam Thomas Farber said the family was devastated by the news.

"It's a very sad day for Wendy's, and our family. We just didn't think this would be the outcome," said Farber, 53.

RIVERDALE, Utah - Wal-Mart Stores Inc. apologized to a Muslim woman who said she was mocked because of her face veil.

"Please don't stick me up," a cashier told the shopper on Feb. 2, according to The Council on American-Islamic Relations.

Wal-Mart apologized Monday in a letter signed by Rolando Rodriquez, a vice president and regional general manager. It was released Tuesday by the council's Nevada chapter.

"I can assure you that the associate in question was disciplined in accordance with our employment policies as a result of the situation," Rodriguez said without disclosing details.

Rodriguez said employees at the Riverdale store would undergo "sensitivity training," specifically in the Islamic faith and Muslim culture.

At Wal-Mart headquarters in Bentonville, Ark., spokesman Phillip Keene confirmed the letter and declined further comment.

"We applaud Wal-Mart for taking appropriate action to resolve this incident," said Yasser Moten, executive director of the council's Nevada chapter. The group doesn't have an office in Utah.

PARIS (AFP) - Joseph Stiglitz, the Nobel laureate economist, declared himself "almost certain" Thursday that the next US president, whoever it turns out to be, will get tough on climate change.

"I don't want to be over confident, but I'm almost certain that the new president will come (through) on this issue," Stiglitz told a conference in Paris.

"All three of them are very committed to do something and it's a major change in the environmental landscape," he said, referring to White House hopefuls Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and John McCain.

Stiglitz, a 64-year-old winner of the Nobel economics prize in 2001 and a professor at Columbia University in New York, said he would be backing a Democrat, although he acknowledged climate change was also a big issue for McCain, the Republican Party's likely nominee.

"I'm going to support a Democrat candidate: the policies of the two candidates are not different, there are differences between their personalities but despite intense debates, in many ways they are very close," he said.

"McCain is very concerned too. He was on this issue when it was not a major issue," he added.

Stiglitz, known for his outspokenness and criticism of globalization, is also a former chief economist at the World Bank who resigned in 1999 after accusing rich countries of not doing enough to help the poor.

By Andy Sullivan 24 minutes ago

BOSTON (Reuters) - Former Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney endorsed erstwhile rival John McCain on Thursday and urged Republicans to unite behind him in a gesture that could help McCain with disgruntled conservatives.

In the Democratic race, Sen. Hillary Clinton scored a much-needed victory in New Mexico and accused surging opponent Barack Obama of lacking substance and experience as she fought for political traction in Ohio after a string of losses.

After a rough campaign battle between them to be the party's nominee in November's election, Romney offered conciliatory words to McCain a week after dropping out of the race, calling him an American hero.

"Even when the contest was close and our disagreements were debated, the caliber of the man was apparent," Romney said with McCain at his side. "This is a man capable of leading our country at a dangerous hour."

EBay Saves Billions For Bidders

Maryland professors found that buyers saved an average of $4 per person, or $19 billion total, at the popular online auction site.

If you think you would save money by bidding on eBay (NSDQ: EBAY) auctions, you would likely be right, according to a study released Monday by researchers at the University of Maryland. In fact, the researchers maintain eBay bidders saved $19 billion in 2007 at the popular auction site.

Researchers Wolfgang Jank and Galit Shmueli studied eBay online auctions in 2003 and found savings of $7 billion; they arrived at the $19 billion figure by extrapolating the figures forward into 2007.

The two associate professors at the university's Robert H. Smith School of Business worked with the Indian School of Business' Ravi Bapna, who maintained a sniper Web site that assisted bidders in automatically placing bids at the last minute of auctions. Bapna, an associate professor at the Indian school, was able to use his cniper.com site to calculate the difference between the actual purchase price paid for auction items and the top price bidders stated they were willing to pay.

The difference is called "consumer surplus" and the Maryland researchers found it averaged at least $4 per auction.

"This is the first time consumer surplus has been quantified in online auctions," said Shmueli in a statement. "You just can't quantify this for traditional retailers."

Jank said all three major parties involved in eBay's auctions -- buyers, sellers, and the company itself -- benefit from eBay auctions.

"All three parties on eBay win," he said. "Obviously the consumers win because they accrue a very large surplus... which is either money they can put in the bank or spend."

Noting that it's difficult to quantify the value for sellers, Jank said they win in the sense that eBay attracts a "large critical mass of potential buyers" for the sellers. The value to eBay is "obvious," he said, because of the funds generated for the company by the auctions.

More than 4,500 U.S. and European eBay auctions in 2003 were examined in the professors' research. Their complete study, titled "Consumer Surplus in Online Auctions," will be published in the Journal of Information Systems Research.
